Hey friend! Do you love talking communities too? Before you read my description, here's a disclaimer - You will find the word community being repeated multiple times because it's literally what I live on. My involvement with communities dates back to my college days where I accidentally found my passion in this domain while attempting to increase the participation of underrepresented groups in my local environment, especially women, in technology because the space I came from, STEM was, rather still is, considered a male dominated sector and I wanted it to be a space where more diverse groups of people could feel belonged irrespective of their gender, ethnicity, age etc. When I look back today, through various community programmes, we were able to touch and impact the lives of thousands of tech enthusiasts and what made it inspiring was the fact that many of these people who were part of these initiatives are today building their own communities to help developers grow in the software development industry. This year I explored a new niche, community of community builders which gave me a clearer picture of - how communities are helping brands grow their businesses today, challenges people in community roles are facing, why sustainability and inflow of resources is important irrespective of what community you are building, the accelerated rise of online communities post the pandemic, how we are indeed moving towards a community-led future and many more. This was further strengthened from our learnings while creating the State of Indian Community Management Report at LikeMinds which is the first documentation of growth of online communities in India. Community builders are indeed visionaries and I am grateful to have been involved in organizations and programmes that empower them, some of which include, serving as the Learning Mentor for the Community Management Certification programme from Meta, highlighting stories of passionate Indian Community Builders over Instagram Live at LikeMinds, delivering workshops and talks around Community Building for various brands, creating public resources around the field and empowering many towards a sustainable future for their communities.
