As Senior Technical Advisor Sanjay was the primary Mercy Corps staff member responsible for overseeing the governance and partnership portfolio with the Resilience Governance and Partnership Technical Support Unit (TSU). This included technical inputs into designing new programs, providing management support of program staff within multiple country programs, plus management of high-level consultants to ensure quality performance and efficiency. In addition he advised and trained Mercy Corps staff at the country, regional and global level about governance of various systems. He led and contributed to research initiatives to inform future grant applications and good practices on a) the impact of public-private partnerships in economic development and b) existing formal/informal governance structures and how to help them be more efficient and effective. This work significantly contributed to Mercy Corps’s ability to communicate their experience with the larger field of international development and to influence policy makers and donors.

• Managed agency operations in Delhi to formally establish Mercy Corps’ registration in India. • Led the process of setting up the operations for Mercy Corps programs in Indian-controlled Kashmir and Orissa, working with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Reserve Bank of India, legal firms and consultants.• Provided continued management and technical support to Mercy Corps programs in Northeast India. • Coordinated Mercy Corps’ regional fund raising plan for programs in Nepal, Sri Lanka and Burma/Myanmar

Darjeeling, India

Supervised over 45 national staff providing administrative, financial, and program support to ensure the smooth and effective implementation of the projects. He developed local capacity by mentoring and guiding local staff, including conducting workshops and training sessions focused on administrative and financial management issues and processes. • Led the US $ 2.5 million, multi year Starbucks funded Community Health and Advancement Initiative (CHAI) Darjeeling and US $ 250,000 Adventurists Development Initiative (ADI). The two programs work with the communities in Darjeeling region of North Bengal to improve their quality of life through health, economic development, youth and infrastructure initiatives. The two programs reached out to a total of over 24,000 beneficiaries covering over 60 communities.• As a part of the grants to local partners program successfully supported “Shanker” Foundation a network of people living with HIV/AIDS through organizational development, opportunistic infection treatment and extension education program. • Designed and led the successful $ 100,000 small framers program “Organic Ekta” which has now become an independent 400 strong member organization representing the rights of small famer’s tea growers in North East India. • Sanjay led the networking and advocacy for Mercy Corps by successfully working with various community based organizations and local NGOs, district and national level government bodies like District Rural Development Cell, State Land Reforms Department, various Block and Sub Divisional development offices, Darjeeling Tea Association, Tea Board of India and the National Agricultural Development Bank of India. He helped develop and foster relation with Major Tea companies at the plantation level and at higher management level.
