I am a Consultant Paediatrician specialising in Child Development, Behaviour and Wellbeing.My personal experiences and observations growing up in Sri Lanka and Tanzania, before migrating to Australia, have fostered a longstanding interest in the social and cultural context of Health and Wellbeing. Having lived within these different societal constructs, I have gained a greater understanding of the health inequality that exists globally. My life journey has given me a relatively unique ability to identify and integrate seemingly diametrically opposed issues and perspectives. My interest in Indigenous Health (and Health Beliefs), Social determinants of Health (Health literacy and Health Promotion) and the Wellbeing model (Positive Psychology and Coaching) stem from my heart’s desire to address healthy inequity through capacity building and empowerment at the individual and the population level.To this end I am founding n of 1® Child Development and Wellbeing Consulting and Coaching Service with the aim of providing holistic care using therapeutic strategies that integrate the mind, body and spirit. The service model is based on principles derived from community paediatrics, child public health, and innovative therapeutic approaches from positive (humanistic) psychology; to look beyond the illness model and engage with the wellbeing model. Considering a child’s developmental and behavioural issues in the context of the social determinants experienced by his or her family, understanding their underlying health beliefs and the level of health literacy, and finding ways to promote health beliefs and practices congruent with where they are at i.e. co-creating a coordinated and comprehensive management plan that builds capacity and empowers.My most important personal goal is being able to show up as my authentic self and ensure that my professionalism is well grounded in personal and professional integrity.
