About Sara Evans
Currently I am a Doctoral Candidate in the Theology and Religion Department at the University of Otago. My research is in the field of liturgical studies and is broadly focused on the material and embodied aspects of liturgy, providing a sense of their significance and and possibility for mediating God's presence. I am particularly interested in engaging the work of ritual theorists and Michael Polanyi's epistemological framework for tacit knowledge. I have also utilised the liturgical work of various theologians including Robert Jenson, Hans Urs von Balthasar, and Alexander Schmemann. In addressing the ontological aspects of a participatory possibility in liturgy I am drawing on the work of Jean Luc Marion, Oliver Davies, and Jean Louis Chrétien. Much of my work has been bolstered by patristic writings whose wisdom is particularly prescient today; by combining the work of Saint Maximus the Confessor and Oliver Davies I have developed a cosmological understanding of the liturgy which undergirds the thesis as a whole.I am also an adjunct professor at Denver Seminary, which helps me to stay focused on my longterm goal of teaching. I want to walk alongside students as they grow in their understanding of theology, history, and how those things shape them individually and in community. Generally I teach one of two Christian Doctrine courses but I have presented in other courses as well.Over the years I've held a wide variety of positions, but each has held in common the desire to serve others and nurture their growth. I enjoy working with others in a variety of ways but most particularly through teaching and theological education.
