About Sara Marks
With over 20 years of experience in academic libraries, I'm a librarian who makes evidence-based decisions, encourages open communication, and is passionate about strength-based thinking.I welcome connections from those I don't know and would love to learn how our connection can help you. Please send me a message and let me know what you need and how I can help get you there. My Clifton Strengths Top Five: learner, input, intellection, relator, strategic. At UMass Lowell, I initially focused on supporting the College of Health Sciences, and over time my responsibilities grew to include the colleges and programs across the entire university. This shift allowed me to explore new ways of engaging students, including providing asynchronous support like short instructional videos, a reference ticketing system, a Frequently Asked Question support page, and live chat service. These support tools allowed a lean library staff to efficiently address recurring campus needs which allows faculty librarians to spend more of their time on high-touch interactions and complicated requests. My current role is focused on communication and user experience. At Fitchburg State University, I re-designed the library instruction program to focus on information literacy. Using data from student interactions and feedback from faculty, I strategically approached the program’s outcomes and goals, learning how to build and lead a team around a shared vision and mission. I sought opportunities to learn from faculty and support services about new ways to engage with students. I served on the curriculum committee in order to connect information literacy with students’ coursework and real-life experiences. In 2017 I published my first book and has been part of the indie publishing community ever since. Locally i've been a local municipal liaison for National Novel Writing Month in two cities. Over the past three years I've worked with local groups, libraries, and bookstores to support local authors on running their author and publishing businesses.
