SDM Foundation is a non-profit organization providing free technical computer training (devices and software) to the community. We believe that no one should be at a disadvantage through a lack of access to computer training and knowledge. As a trainer I help our clients learn new skills, whether that be how to use a new device or software application, or brush up on existing knowledge. Many of our clients are looking to re-enter the workplace, expand their skill set, or simply learn to use the devices and apps that their children and grandchildren use. One day may be spent teaching someone how to navigate the online job application process, while the next might be spent teaching a senior how to use their new smartphone, and the next might be spent creating presentation material on online safety and parental controls for a community event. Much of my time at SDM focuses on teaching small businesses how to build and manage their online presence, from website design and management through to optimizing their social media channels. My background in project management including brief definition, stakeholder management and design team management brings an added dimension to my role, especially when working with small businesses. In my early career as an engineer I worked on a diverse range of projects for public and private sector clients. I started my career with Arup in London as a Building Services Engineer. These projects provided a breadth of experience in all aspects of environmental system design and sustainability issues as well as project and design management. I was also responsible for the co-ordination of the services design for City Hall in central London, for which I won the H&V News Building Services Engineer of the Year Award in 2003. That year I also won the WISE prize, Young Woman Engineer of the Year. While working for Mace Scotland, I was the champion for all sustainable issues, and was lucky enough to work as a consultant for Zero Waste Scotland where I created and delivered training across the UK, to City Councils and Higher Education Facilities teams, on reducing waste during the construction process. I am also particularly interested in the wider perception of Engineering, Construction and Design. I was the subject of a BBC Educational program entitled Snapshots and I advised and mentored students. I also tutored in the Architecture Department at the University of Strathclyde.I was the chair of the Scottish branch of the National Association of Women in Construction prior to my move to the States.
