In this position I recruited qualified candidates for Capital's Master of Art in Education: Teaching, Master of Art in Education: School Counseling, Master of Art in Clinical Mental Health Counseling, Master of Music in Music Education, Post-Degree Education Licensure and various Graduate Endorsement Programs. I managed all applications, application materials and data. I worked closely with program faculty to create innovative ways to present the programs to prospective students. I connected prospective students and applicants with various campus resources.This job was a great opportunity for me to learn about licensure requirements for some of the most important jobs in Ohio--teachers, school counselors and clinical mental health counselors. I met really driven, intelligent people who devoted their careers to helping others. I worked with a caring group of creative individuals. This job not only expanded my professional knowledge, but also pushed me to grow personally as well.

I worked directly with the English department at Wilmington College to design EN 100 and EN 101 courses in alignment with WC Core Values and general education requirements. I crafted original syllabi to meet student and Wilmington College needs. I developed engaging lesson plans and lead scheduled class meetings. I responded to all student work—including administering all grades. I worked one on one with students to improve writing skills in a project-based system.My favorite part of working for Wilmington College was the flexibility I was afforded in teaching English Composition. For two semesters I led a food-themed composition course. Everyone wants to talk about what they eat. Since Agriculture is a big part of WC and the Wilmington area I focused on issues affecting the production and distribution of food for one semester. Another semester I focused on food insecurity on college campuses. Other semesters I treated my classroom like a democracy--letting students vote on reading material and the direction of classroom discussion.

I provided career counseling to current and prospective students—including administering and discussing the results of the Holland and Type Focus Assessments. I worked with current and prospective students to create course schedules that fit their work schedules and lifestyle. I collaborated with Student Success Center staff to implement programs and initiatives to improve retention rates at SSCC. I researched, organized, and presented information on college readiness and preparedness at SSCC events. I coordinated tasks between departments within the college to establish and maintain academic standards, including updating and distributing degree audit reports (sometimes referred to as program maps) for each academic program. I connected students to various resources within the college including tutoring, accessibility services, mental health services, career counseling and technology services.In addition to my Academic and Career Advising duties I led the Advising Build team for the configuration, implementation and adoption of EAB Navigate—a student success software platform. In this role I crafted and revised copy for the student-facing side of platform, created personalized training documents for SSCC staff and students, tested the platform at various phases of production and collaborated with departments and staff members across SSCC to ensure the platform's successful implementation. I trained staff members on how to use and maximize the effectiveness of the software. In 2015 I created and implemented a paperless advising record keeping system—a system which SSCC used until EAB Navigate was fully implemented.I completed various tasks of institutional research to determine Student Success Center effectiveness, success in foundational and prerequisite courses and degree completion rates.

I responded to all student work—including administering all grades. I worked one on one with students to improve writing skills in a project-based system.I enjoyed the small class sizes at Chatfield. I felt like I connected with each of my students, learned their writing styles and met them where they were. Chatfield used anthologies and standard textbooks and I worked to make material relevant and engaging to a mostly high-school-aged student population. Working with young writers is a great opportunity. I learned a lot from my students at Chatfield.

In this role I had full-responsibility for the courses I taught. I worked directly with the staff of the Center for Writing Excellence to develop course syllabi and structure that exceeded the guidelines established by the General Education Curriculum Objective 1. I developed lesson plans in accordance with syllabi and conducted scheduled class meetings. I collected and responded to student work—including administering all grades. I worked with students to improve their writing in a portfolio-based system. I taught 13 sections of English 101: Composition and Rhetoric as well as oneSection of English 111: Introduction to Creative Writing.This was my first college-teaching experience. I learned so much at WVU and refer to examples and lessons I learned there often. Teaching at a large school gave me insight and perspective on my place in higher education--and knowledge that I pass on to my students at the Associate Degree level about transferring to a bigger school. In this position I served several roles: Tutor, Office Assistant, Program Coordinator. I jumped in and did whatever was necessary to facilitate the high level of student service provided by the Advising Center at SSCC. I completed CRLA Level 1 Tutor Training. I directed current and prospective SSCC students to appropriate staff member or department to resolve questions and concerns quickly and effectively. I scheduled appointments for advisors. I worked with Advising and Retention staff members to create a visual aid to train future Office Assistants in order to provide the best customer service possible. I trained Office Assistants at other campuses so that the Student Success Center frontline staff provided consistent customer service across all campuses.
