I coached a cohort of extraordinary fellows to develop and write powerful personal stories to gain college admissions and funding through competitive and prestigious scholarships. The mission of TFI is to help Black, Latino and other young men of color acquire the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to succeed academically, achieve their personal and professional potential, and establish themselves as the next generation of global leaders. These young men were chosen based on the strength of their dreams for their own lives. As writers, the Fellows grew from making minimal investment in their sentences and expository logic, to being able to articulate key stories of their lives in compelling, game-changing narratives.Now, in conjunction with PBL offered by NorthEastern College Access program, I have created a personal essay writing program as professional guidance for the Fellows’ Saturday Academy ELA instructors. I also devised workshops that I will deliver in Spring and Summer 2016 across their 3-city markets (NY, CH, LA) to prepare the Fellows for college essay writing, building their understanding of the genre and techniques for conveying strong personal stories.

I have worn many hats at the TEAK Fellowship. Among them, overseeing 7th grade cohort and amazing teaching staff. I also teach personal essay writing to these exceptionally talented 7th graders from New York City's public schools to be awake to language, as readers, writers, and grammarians. Yep-- grammarians. They learn how to work language magic through mastering its mechanics. We create as many opportunities as possible for the students to capitalize on their intelligence, creativity, empathy and leadership, and prepare them to gain admissions in competitive independent, private and day schools. I also piloted TEAK's Latin language program as part of their rigorous middle school Summer Institute.

Peripatetic

I teach "yoga yoga", as one of my students described it. Private and semi-private, therapeutic, intuitive, and style-less. I feel especially privileged to offer yoga to adolescents anywhere that more room can be made to breathe, visualize, and really rest. Peace is chemical, and therefore achievable.My longest ongoing class has been held for 8 years at Murphy Institute for Worker Education, School of Professional Studies, CUNY. As part of a great team of teachers, I taught New York City's brightest public high school students the grammar and expository writing skills so often missing from their academic curriculum. After co-leading a Radical Revision workshop this fall with the Good Brain Project, I consulted one-on-one with SEO's ambitious college applicants to transform their college essays into clean pieces that proudly spoke definitive truths.

For one school year, I traveled the world with the extraordinary, adventuresome Capossela Family, “home-schooling” their two bright daughters, then in 5th and 8th grade respectively. Rich, site-specific history was our live curriculum; my teaching material was primarily driven by my students’ immediate intellectual interests, and supplemented by requisite language and science studies on par with their peers at St. Ann’s School in Brooklyn.

Under the caring mentorship of master teacher and department chair Paul O’Rourke, I taught and devised curriculum for 6-12th grade Latin. This included foundations of English grammar, Latin grammar and syntax, basic linguistics, translation skills, and Latin AP Literature, Catullus and Horace. This invigorating school trusts its teachers, granting them total autonomy; educators and students thrive in its bold, intellectual tradition, embracing all art. After leaving my position there to live and study in Asia, I was occasionally reengaged as a professional substitute.
