As a Summer Research Associate, I researched and compiled content for the Fallen Journalists Memorial Foundation web site. Content encompassed data and other information pertaining to American journalists who died defending democracy while on assignment in the U.S. or overseas.

As a PhD candidate, I worked as an Adjunct Instructor teaching Introduction to Mass Communications in the Philip Merrill College of Journalism. This course covers a wide variety of topics, including critical thinking and media, press freedom and the political and economic factors currently seeking to undermine it. The course also covers media literacy, the integration of new media technologies and their influence on how we communicate, media convergence and how it has shaped communication, mass communication and politics in the digital age, global media, interactive media, public relations, media ethics, and media law. My top priority as an instructor is to promote critical thinking skills in the classroom. With this in mind, I designed a new curriculum, which I presented to the faculty, for teaching undergraduate students how to craft journalism that reports the facts while engaging critically and responsibly with issues and challenges effecting diverse individuals.I teach critical thinking as a foundation for problem solving and for increasing student knowledge concerning things they think they already know. One of the pillars of education is to never stop questioning.

I am presently engaged in research that examines the need for greater responsibility in the media's treatment of East Asian ethnic groups in the U.S. My work compares media framing of anti-Asian hate crimes in the 1970s and 1980s to present-day framing of such crimes in the wake of a resurgence of anti-Asian violence in the U.S. My most current research analyzes how the Vincent Chin murder case, which unfolded between 1982-1987, serves as a landmark case for journalists in drawing public attention to the longevity and severity of violence against Asian Americans. I examine how the media's revival of the Vincent Chin case in reports of new cases of violence against Asian Americans serves as an object lesson for today's print and broadcast media journalists for how to report more responsibly and with greater sensitivity on race and ethnic group issues. I explore how the case serves as a lesson for journalists for how to approach writing news reports regarding hate crimes more carefully by consulting with advocacy group leaders about possible deficiencies in media framing of race issues and how to improve such framing.

I taught and designed curricula for upper-level undergraduate students for Literary Journalism from the 1800s through the present-day. I planned discussion sessions and group activities for students from a variety of academic backgrounds, interests and majors. I also participated in multiple training workshops to build my online skill set and learn how to effectively interact with students in an online course setting.

Conducted database research showcasing the necessity and importance of the proposed Fallen Journalist Memorial in Washington, D.C. Gathered data encompassing the personal lives, aspirations, and professional development of sixty-five journalists who gave their lives while working on assignment.Developed ways to engage with students and educational institutions who desire to learn the basics of press freedom.

I collaborated with a J.P. Conte Fellow in Immigration Studies to write two book chapters. This pro-immigrant study investigates why particular U.S. presidents either espoused or opposed key U.S. federal immigration policies passed between 1790 and the present day. The book explores how these presidents pushed back against the xenophobic character of specific laws and how the media covered these developments.

I assisted the professor in teaching students how journalists have modeled leadership during key periods in American history from 1900 until the present. I designed group projects and engaged students in class discussions and activities, establishing clear guidelines and expectations and ensuring open lines of communication between the professor, students and myself.

Under the supervision of a senior research team member, I conducted historical research to reconstruct U.S. immigration history from the 1600s until 1965 in preparation for a massive book project. I performed data analysis, catalogued results, wrote research summaries, and maintained clear lines of communication as I coordinated with team members in Washington, D.C. and Palo, Alto, California. I investigated public attitudes toward Congress as a function of the role of the media by analyzing how newspapers use comments by White House officials, executive branch officials, and political analysts to place a negative or positive spin on Congress’ passage of legislation over time. I also examined the role of Congress’ minority party in determining whether the majority accomplishes its policy goals and the extent to which the majority achieves these goals using Congress.gov, govtrack, Congressional Quarterly Almanac and Congressional Quarterly Magazine databases.I researched measures of significant legislation from 1877-1994 using the Clinton-Lapinski database to ascertain whether laws that pass along partisan lines are laws deemed highly important.

I researched and organized information pertaining to a wide array of topics encompassing politics, health and medicine, society, art, entertainment and hard news stories. Using critical thinking skills, I transformed language pertaining to specific professions into "plain English" for target audiences and advertisers, Additionally, I collaborated with publishers, managing editors and staff to ensure timely completion of articles, frequently crafting multiple news stories simultaneously and working under rigid deadlines.

As a press assistant, I oversaw media relations and website content, resulting in an election victory over the opponent by 15 points. Additionally, I wrote, edited and proofread dozens of press releases, memos, blog posts and Facebook and Twitter content. I also led dozens of press conferences, performing preparatory research by identifying the most relevant materials.

Fundraising expands your network of people and opportunities and creates great memories! During my tenure at Eureka College as a fundraiser, I surpassed the Board of Trustees’ fundraising goal by 67 percent during the first 7 months on the job, raising over $200,000. Additionally, I managed communications strategies to major donors, resulting in 125 new donors to the college in one year. I also utilized critical thinking and problem-solving skills to ensure timely completion of multiple grant proposals. I collaborated with diverse departments and diverse individuals both within and outside of the College.

I genuinely loved my experience at the RNC. It prepared me for living in Washington, D.C. and introduced me to the RNC Secretary for whom I wrote, edited and revised hundreds of speeches for statewide and local political events, managing multiple projects at once under rigid deadlines. I organized a team of researchers to identify materials relevant for speeches given at specific campaign events. A majority of my time involved scanning relevant news stories and developing research summaries for web site publication.
