Editor of the Freemuse Global Report: State of Artistic Freedom 2023

Consultant providing expert input into the Council of Europe's Fee to Create|Free to Create project on promoting artistic freedom in Europe, assisting in the drafting of its 2020 Manifesto, carrying out research and writing reports and lead coordinator of workshops with artists, cultural workers and others towards better protection of this right.

Among 43 international experts forming the Expert Facility providing expertise on UNESCO's 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, specifically in my case on freedom of artistic expression. I am the author of the chapters on artistic freedom and social and economic rights in the 2018 and 2022 Global Reports on the Convention, and co-designer of a training program geared towards artists, cultural actors, governments, academics and others working to protect this right.

Since leaving PEN in 2013, I have worked on a number of projects, notably as editor of its annual case list of writers under attack. From May 2020 to June 2021 I rejoined the PEN International team to provide part-time interim advocacy and research support on its advocacy work on Asia, MENA and Europe.

As head of its programme promoting freedom of expression and the right to write, I was responsible for making PEN one of the most respected organisations in its field. Acted as Interim Executive Director of PEN International, worked with the PEN Board to develop a strategy for the development of the organisation including strategic review for the future. Led finance management, budget monitoring and fundraising, as well as human resources and oversight of the day to day management of staff and office. This alongside continuing my work as Programme Director of PEN's Free Expression Programme.

As co-ordinator at Amnesty International’s Asia Research Department, I ran AI’s human rights campaigning on East Asia (North and South Korea, Taiwan, Japan and Australia). I Developed strategies and oversaw AI’s international campaign against human rights abuses and carried out research on the broad scope of human rights in this cluster of countries.

Assisted in the establishment and the running of this small media group providing a specialist Middle East politics and economics news service to UK and Dutch businesses.

Provided administrative and research support to the London based producer of this Dutch film company specialising in documentaries on human rights and development issues.
