About Sara Reilly
I was the rare student in school (elementary, middle, and high!) who never complained about math. I loved the complexity of it and how math problems were like puzzles to solve. This was not the norm when I was a child, and math still gets a lot of flak today. As a secondary math teacher, I’ve heard it all: "Why do we ever have to learn this?” "What's the point?" “I HATTTTTE MATH.” Based on my love of timed math tests (the candy and stickers were powerful motivators!), it’s no surprise that I became a math teacher. I have been tutoring and teaching secondary students (and adults) since I was in college. I teach a growth mindset and the value of proactivity over reactivity, with a focus on social-emotional learning, mental health awareness, and self-care. I especially love working with adolescents and find joy in helping them learn to navigate our world independently. I teach my students that learning math is fundamental to improving their ability to think critically, to challenge themselves, and to know how to compute simple concepts in their heads. Another life skill is learning how to effectively engage in virtual spaces. When it comes to teaching online, candy and/or stickers cannot play a role as a motivator! Motivating from within is the key. Motivation must be intrinsic and students need to believe that it will help them live more successfully in the very near future. As an experienced tutor, teacher, instructor, and curriculum/content developer, I understand how to design, create, and deliver virtual and in-person lessons that engage students in learning what they need to know while applying lessons to their lives. It turns out secondary students are very interested in learning how much a car loan ACTUALLY costs them. I teach them that math is about life, and it works! I value working in a team environment and enjoy taking a leadership role. Building strong relationships with my colleagues, students, families, and other stakeholders is key to success in any environment. I thrive in workplaces that value communication, transparency, innovation, and continuous improvement and look forward to joining a team that feels the same and insists upon it.
