Memory drives collective oscillations in Leptothorax acervorum- Establish how local social interactions lead to globally synchronized activity waves, in colonies of Leptothorax acervorum, by designing and executing algorithms for analysis of individual trajectories.- Investigate relative importances of interaction types by simulating colonies of ants using a mobile cellular automaton model.

Networks and information transfer in schooling fish- Revealed complex interaction network used by fish schools in alarm propagation by developing statistical models and using machine vision techniques. Created visualizations of these spatially-embedded networks.- Established the importance of considering local network structure in predicting spread of behavioral cascades, using generalized linear model regression.- Validated this result by building simulation experiments to explore the effects of different types of network structure on propagation of behavioral cascades.Simulated animal groups balance exploration and exploitation- Revealed a simple mechanism through which individuals balance exploration with exploitation of resources in dynamic environments by implementing a spatial model of collective behavior.- Performed sensitivity analysis to determine that groups must be poised at a critical point between order and disorder to enable optimal exploitation of resources.
