About Sara Feldman
Sara has designed a career that combines her passion for working with people with her enthusiasm for communication and creativity. She has worked with diverse populations ranging from at-risk youth in Los Angeles and Kenya to war-affected communities in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to refugees in the US and Ethiopia.As a graduate student, Sara began a program for at-risk youth at a community center in Western Kenya that became the non-profit organization Voices for Umoja (umoja means unity in Swahili). Voices for Umoja ran programs for youth and women for six years in Kenya before moving to war-affected Moba, DRC, where it currently runs community education programs.Sara discovered early in her career that she had a high tolerance for listening to difficult stories and sitting with people in their pain. She was inspired by the challenge of providing high-quality services in difficult conditions with limited resources. She harnessed these attributes to do transformational work with juvenile sex offenders, refugees, survivors of torture, war, and trafficking, and the acutely mentally ill. She ran psychosocial programs in remote areas in the DRC and in refugee camps in northern Ethiopia. Having built a career centered on trauma, Sara has provided training on the subject to various nongovernmental organizations, government officials, community and religious leaders, community members, and United Nations staff.Sara moved into the academic world first at Addis Ababa University’s Clinical Psychology Program, later joining Columbia University’s School of Social Work and Fordham University's Graduate School of Social Service. She writes, having authored chapters in two international bestselling books, and speaks internationally.Interested in the possibilities that technology provides, Sara became a Talkspace therapist and worked with NICABM to develop online courses for seasoned clinicians. She joined the first cohort of London-based Zinc VC social impact accelerator, where she founded the mental health tech company Dialoguers. With a sense that she could make an impact doing preventative work in the mental health arena, Sara joined Counseling and Support Services for Youth (CASSY) as an elementary school therapist in East Palo Alto. She later became the first Behavioral Therapist at Brightline, a startup focused on tech-enabled pediatric behavioral health before returning to East Palo Alto’s Ravenswood City School District as Los Robles-Ronald McNair Academy’s first Mental Health Therapist.
