Research Consultant
Co-led survey-based project focused on documenting, comparing, and ultimately improving political candidates’ experiences on the campaign trail. The hostile political environment and its negative effects on politicians’ wellbeing is much discussed, but there is a lack of empirical data measuring the problem and comparing the experiences of candidates of different genders. This study had two components, because the project leaders hoped to not only observe and document the problem but to do so in a way that was constructive and hopefully helpful to study participants. Part 1: a survey open to all candidates who ran for office in California from 2016 to 2022, asking about their experiences running for office and with hostility, especially related to their sex or gender identity, and effects on mental health or well-being. I led the survey design with the help of the project team and a political scientist PhD.Part 1.5: The team conducted follow-up phone interviews with select survey participants to gather additional qualitative insight and anecdotal evidence.Part 2: a series of wellness roundtables were conducted, moderated by a licensed mental health professional for a small group of participants. Participants were given an anonymous space to elaborate further on their experiences running for office and provide qualitative anecdotal evidence to supplement the survey data. My colleague a professional therapist was there to guide the conversation, provide mental health resources and discuss strategies with participants. I attended the first roundtable to observe and take notes on the candidates’ experiences and how they describe them. For the final report, I conducted the literature review and data analysis.
