Dr Sarah Auburn is an experienced molecular biologist, whose research passion is using genetic and genomic approaches to learn about the biology and epidemiology of pathogens and their hosts. She has worked in malaria research for 14 years and is a creative scientist with diverse skills transcending field work, molecular laboratory techniques and genetic and genomic data analysis. She has committed to her passion in genetic epidemiology since undertaking a BSc in Genetics from University College London and a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology from Oxford University. In her first post-doctoral placement, Sarah spent 3 years at the Wellcome Sanger Institute in Cambridge, where she facilitated the start-up of the institute’s first Plasmodium molecular laboratory. She currently holds a Senior Research Fellow post at Menzies School of Health Research, where she leads the genetic and genomic studies on Plasmodium vivax. In this role, Sarah has used her exceptional collaborative and relationship-building skills to establish a network for P. vivax genomic epidemiology studies (the vivax Genomic Epidemiology Network). The vivaxGEN network is producing a wealth of genetic and genomic data on parasites from across the globe and lending important insights into the biology and epidemiology of this species. Sarah is also affiliated with the UK MRC Centre for Genomics and Global Health, the Australian Centre of Research Excellence in Malaria Elimination (ACREME), and the Asia Pacific Malaria Elimination Network (APMEN), where she applies her strong values in capacity building by supporting access to genomic technologies for partners in malaria-endemic countries.
