Dr YES is a program run by the Australian Medical Association where medical students go out to metropolitan and rural high schools to have open and engaging communications about the big issues facing youth health - particularly alcohol and drugs, mental health and sexual health. I am involved in a research capacity, specifically focussing on the effectiveness of the mental health sessions in harm-minimisation and health literacy.The social landscape young people face is constantly evolving and it is important to remain well informed about the health attitudes and actions of young people. Current evaluation of the Dr YES program is in the form of feedback from medical student volunteers and coordinators, and via surveys done by students and teachers at the end of each session. This feedback drives development and improvement of the session content. In response to feedback that the mental health sessions are often too short and seem rushed, my research program will implement an additional session which will specifically focus on mental health issues that are important to young people but are often missed due to time difficulties such as body image, bullying, technology use, and suicide. This project is evaluating the Dr YES program further by looking at its’ effectiveness after 6 months and the retention of information by students. This will be compared with the outcomes 6 months after the single session. Focus groups from each school will also be used in order to incorporate more student focus into the development of Dr YES, provide opportunities for new perspectives about the program, and gain more insight into student reception of the sessions.

Teddy Bear Hospital is a program run by medical students of the University of Western Australia which aims to provide health promotion to children in a fun and interactive way. We visit primary schools throughout Perth and provide simple messages to young children about how to be healthy, and aim to additionally reduce the fear around visiting doctors.

My role within the the Western Australian Medical Student Society is to advocate for and promote both medical student mental health, and the mental health of the broader university community. This includes raising awareness about mental health, liaising with the university on behalf of students, reducing stigma, and organising events to promote mental well-being.

I work with Indigenous high school students on a one-on-one capacity to assist with skills in Mathematics, Science, English, French and Social Studies

Worked in various roles as a histology and anatomy tutor and demonstrator. I work with the members of faculty to prepare teaching sessions in order to fulfill required learning outcomes for students. In addition, I prepare cadaveric specimens, plastic anatomy models, histology slides, and other learning material prior to the class. My main task is to run interactive lecture type classes prior to laboratories in order to solidify student knowledge and work with students in small groups and one-on-one to aid in the understanding of difficult areas within the topic

Resident Medical Officer

The 'Let's Talk' program at Amnesty International provides English tutoring services to refugees and asylum seekers. It also aims to familiarise students with Australian cultural practices and general lifestyle advice for integrating more easily into their new location. My role also included writing lesson plans and reporting on student progress. I was also required to communicate effectively to students who are culturally and linguistically diverse.
