BAI owns and operates a national network of more than 580 broadcast transmission sites (more than $2bn in assets) across Australia. This network of sites is used to provide fully managed services to the ABC and SBS for their total transmission requirements for radio (AM, FM, HF and DAB) and television. In addition, BAI designs, builds and operates communications infrastructure, as well as providing transmission services for many of Australia’s regional television and radio broadcasters.After successive achievements in my previous roles in BAI, I was promoted to General Manager Operations in the Senior Leadership Team. As General Manager Operations, I led a nationally distributed operational team comprising of more than 150 members that ensured network continuity. I led a dynamic team focused on customer relationships and engaged with senior industry stakeholders to grow revenue in an industry with constantly evolving technology and funding trends. I worked closely with broadcasters to ensure their needs were met and that we delivered essential services, especially during an emergency. This collaboration delivered realistic solutions that both met our customers’ needs and fit within our own capabilities. Major achievements included renewing our key DTV and Analog Radio Public Broadcast contracts creating certainty for our broadcast customers and business into the future.

I was responsible for maintaining current business, improving customer satisfaction and customer service levels for all customers. I led the Customer Account Management Team, Network Operations Centre, Energy Solutions Team, Business Intelligence and Restack Project Teams. Major accomplishments included the successful renewal of a multi-billion dollar, multi-year analog radio contract and successful delivery of the National Digital Television Restack project.

This position held overall responsibility for the Network Operations Centre (NOC) of Broadcast Australia. The NOC remotely monitors and controls over 2,200 TV and Radio services from 580 sites around the country for Public, Commercial and Community Broadcasters. The NOC also provides analysis and reporting to our customers on network performance. A key focus was Emergency Management ensuring that in times of crisis, Australians could rely on their ABC Local Radio service for Emergency Broadcasting.

Initially joining the Company as the Project Manager of Defence Project JP2008, my role expanded to include Contract Management. JP2008 delivered Australia’s first Operational Wideband Global Satellite Communications Anchor Stations. This innovative Australian anchor station represented a significant capability for the ADF with global coverage, increased wideband capacity & operational flexibility. It was the first and WGS certified terminal in Australia. The exacting requirements of the certification process provided an exciting challenge but flexibility and close cooperation with the Defence Materiel Organisation and Major suppliers’ General Dynamics Satcom Technologies (Dish and related infrastructure), and Comtech EF (data modems and related equipment) saw two anchor stations successfully delivered.

A modern, high-tech Army needs highly trained men and women to keep equipment working. The role of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) is to do just that; maintain, repair and manufacture equipment to keep battle winning aircraft, tanks and weapons in fighting order. I served as an Engineering Officer in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers reaching the rank of Captain. During my time in the Army, I deployed to Iraq for Gulf War II, trained new recruits, was Head of REME Operations in the Balkans, and Battalion Project Manager for the implementation of the Army’s BOWMAN ICT system.
