My third-grade teacher tried to frame this feedback as a compliment at spring parent-teacher conferences: "Sarah is very good at correcting others' grammar. And she does it... a lot."When I learned that some people actually get paid to be grammar sticklers, pursuing a career in writing and editing seemed like a no-brainer.Now, I have expanded my repertoire since the third grade: In my time on multiple copy desks, I learned both to lead and to collaborate effectively. I mastered AP Style as well as multiple house style guides. I started asking and answering bigger questions, and as a standards editor, I learned to identify and address more susbtantial issues in a variety of copy, and to deliver solutions on deadline. As Scripps News’ first standards editor, I have deepened my understanding of, and commitments to, the journalistic values of fairness, accuracy and public service. In my pursuit of complete understanding, I've learned from experts and stakeholders as well as acted as a teacher and advocate on their behalves. I have championed and represented my values to both staff and to viewers, and adapted my messaging style to suit my audience's needs.And yes, in the decades since third grade, I've become much more tactful at delivering constructive feedback.I stand by the old adage, "Anything worth doing is worth doing well." I applied this to writing from a very young age, and I apply it to all of my professional pursuits now. If you agree, I'd love to connect!
