About Sarah Chen

As a passionate undergraduate and an ambitious individual, I have committed much of my work to address the importance of sustainability. Being part of many teams at UBC such as Sustaingineering and the Sustainability Ambassadors, has given me good insight on local and global perspectives. I have had the opportunity to engage in implementing strategic solutions through event planning, strategic designs, and environmentally focused workshops. While being exposed to many initiatives, I have also gained an interest in wastewater treatment technologies and glacier regression research. Moreover, I plan to pursue a career within the water/wastewater sector to work with smaller communities in understanding ways to coordinate projects while maintaining a culture's integrity. I believe that a sustainable future entails changes in perspectives and a new phase of technology that requires guidance in resource management. As a goal oriented and ambitious advocate, I am determined to make strategic changes through local impacts that translate into larger objectives.

Sarah Chen Work Experience Details
  • Aecom
    Coop Engineering Intern
    Aecom Jun 2022 - Dec 2022
As a co-op intern at AECOM, I had a variety of roles within the water group. This included project coordination, preliminary design calculations, and extensive data analysis. Additionally, I had the opportunity to work with multiple disciplines through weekly interdisciplinary meetings and gathered design statuses to drive project delivery. Throughout my co-op term I learned preliminary design calculations for sizing pumps and ducts and also enhanced my proficiency in programs such as Excel, Bluebeam, BIM360 and Navisworks. This exposure to a wide range of professions in different areas of a project introduced a different perspective in project management and design.
  • Bc Water & Waste Association
    Bcwwa Student Design Competition
Bc Water & Waste Association Jan 2022 - Apr 2022
    Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
As part of the 2022 BCWWA (British Columbia Water and Waste Association) competition’s problem statement, I coordinated a dedicated team of six to design a cost effective and feasible biosolids management facility for four wastewater treatment plants in the area of Nanaimo on Vancouver Island. The team managed to place second with two deliverables which consisted of a detailed conceptual design report and a 20 minute presentation to introduce the team’s project proposal. The team utilized skills from previous courses to calculate mass and energy balances, equipment sizing and had exposure to process specifics from the guidance of industry professionals and professors.
  • The University Of British Columbia
    Ubc Sustainability Ambassador
The University Of British Columbia Jun 2021 - Apr 2022
    Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
As a Sustainability Ambassador at UBC I developed sustainability competency and professional skills including communication and project management through weekly workshops and team organized events.
  • Ubc Sustaingineering
    Impact Analysis Strategist
    Ubc Sustaingineering Sep 2021 - Feb 2022
    Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada
In order to implement some of Sustaingineering’s previous core projects, the Tiny Home is an ongoing and iterative project to include sustainable systems (wind turbine, rainwater harvesting system, solar panels). To help construct the first prototype of the tiny home, I worked on a report with the impact analysis team to summarize the project’s overall impacts and improvements that could be made in a future design. This sub division focused on research to ensure the highest sustainable standards were met and analyzed the project from cradle-to-gate while considering all aspects of the triple bottom line.
  • University Of Northern British Columbia (Unbc)
    Unbc Engineering Professional Fund
University Of Northern British Columbia (Unbc) Sep 2020 - May 2021
    Prince George, British Columbia, Canada
As part of a selection committee I managed a $400,000 fund dedicated to supporting engineering extra-curricular activities which included professional development workshops, engineering competitions and conferences. Furthermore, I was responsible for setting application eligibility, due dates, and timelines while also reviewing fund applications to ensure students met funding guidelines.
