Sage Florene was raised in Oakville, WA with two sisters and a big extended family. Their passions have always been creative, starting with playing trumpet through high school and singing in choirs through college. After they graduated from Eastern Washington University, they stopped singing. Then the pandemic happened and group music activities became scarce.In 2021 they moved to Seattle for better access to public transportation, healthcare, and community. They found their chosen family at Puget Soundworks - an all-gender, LGBTQIA+ centered community chorus serving the Puget Sound region. They are proud to sing with a chorus that loves them back.Sage is invisibly disabled. Their disabilities include, but are not limited to DiGeorge Syndrome, autism, ADHD, major depressive disorder, and CPTSD. These disabilities have made it hard for them to find and maintain stable employment. In their current role at Brooks Running, they are supported by a team of compassionate peers and leaders that push themselves to craft an accessible space for folks to connect and thrive.In 2023, Sage worked with a small team to launch a disability employee resource group (ERG) at Brooks Running. Sage and their team used their ERG to promote disability education, advocacy, and understanding for their colleagues. They crafted educational resources that are still being accessed by employees today.For Sage, it was possible for them to hide some of the visible aspects of their disability. Now, Sage stims openly at employee meetings. They flap their hands, sway in their office chair, use stim toys, and more. They hope that their visibility will help others to feel more confident in their bodies.
