AcademicI am currently reading for a DPhil in English Local History having graduated with an MA History (Local History) from the University of Leicester where I was a part-time, mature student. My particular interest is in the social and cultural history of early modern England and Wales. My research concerns the relationships between military garrisons and their communities during the civil wars in the English midlands.I am self-motivated, confident, enthusiastic, and with good relationship skills – highly numerate and literate in written, spoken and IT language. TechnicalI have been a qualified archivist for over 25 years, and during this time, I acquired an extensive knowledge of archival holdings ranging from early modern corporation records to twentieth-century business records; in addition, I have developed deep comprehension of the local history of the counties where I worked. An important part of an archivist’s role is the cataloguing and interpreting of archival collections so that their suitability as a research source to be accurately assessed by researchers. This involves a strong understanding of an archive and how its documents relate to other series of records, together with the interpretation of those records using the skills of palaeography and diplomatic. Public EngagementAll my paid and voluntary roles have involved a large degree of public engagement. For example, I have given presentations to local interest groups on archival sources, organised and assisted in historical source workshops and have researched aspects of our village’s history as part of the creation of a heritage hub and for the local historic boundaries research group of which I am a member.
