Dr. Sarah Cuschieri graduated as a medical doctor in 2011, and swiftly transitioned into academia, joining the University of Malta in 2013. Her academic journey saw her excel in postgraduate studies, earning both a Diploma and Masters in Diabetes Mellitus type 2 from Cardiff University, Wales, with distinction between 2012 and 2015. She further distinguished herself by receiving the silver award of excellence from Cardiff University.In 2019, Dr. Cuschieri completed her PhD, focusing on the burden of diabetes mellitus type 2 and dysglycaemia in Malta's adult population. Her commitment to public health extended with a certificate in Public Health Epidemiology from the University of Utrecht in the same year. Recognized for her academic contributions, she was elected to Membership through Distinction by the Faculty of Public Health UK in 2022, Fellowship in Advanced Higher Education (UK) in 2023 and became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health (UK) in 2024.Dr. Cuschieri's research interests span population health, particularly non-communicable diseases including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, as well as medical education. Her scholarly output is substantial, with notable recognition as one of the top 2% most cited scientists globally from 2020 to 2023. She is also an accomplished author, having penned three books and numerous book chapters, providing insights into scientific publishing, epidemiological studies, and guidance for medical students.She won the Academic Leadership and Accomplishment award as part of the Ten Outstanding Young Persons of the World in 2021. Dr. Cuschieri is actively engaged in collaborative research projects, particularly focusing on the burden of diseases in small European states, multimorbidity among others. She serves as the principal investigator for the Horizon Europe project RAPIDE and holds the role of Vice-President of the Chronic Diseases Section of EUPHA.Furthermore, Dr. Cuschieri's academic prowess earned her the role of adjunct assistant Professor at Western University, Ontario, Canada, in 2023, solidifying her international academic standing.
