About Sarah D.
I am the Head of Grants Processes and Operations at the Royal Academy of Engineering leading on improving their use of their Grant management System and the processes that underpin it. Prior to that I worked WWF-UK as their Head of Grant Management Systems and before that at the Royal Society where I was responsible for ensuring processes reflect best practice, that they were fit for purpose, that the grant management system was functioning in the best way possible and that our awards were being held in compliance with our terms and conditions of award. I also worked in the Society as Compliance and Evaluation Manager and prior to that as a Scheme Manager, responsible for some of the Society’s key Grant Schemes. Before moving to the Royal Society I worked as Outreach Coordinator for the Department of Earth Sciences at Imperial College London. This role had me organising the Department's involvement with the numerous summer schools it hosted, but also took me out into schools & science fairs to give presentations about studying the subject at university. I was also responsible for maintaining & developing the Department's social media presence & in refreshing portions of the website, including adding a walking tour of the Department, allowing international students to get a feel for the Department prior to coming.Prior to this I studied accounting, though I completed my first six exams & enjoyed the numerical aspects, I quickly realised this was not for me as I missed the very different challenges faced when working in a more people focused role. During my PhD I focused on the application of geophysical techniques to study both ancient volcanic systems & variations in Earth's magnetic field. I completed my PhD in 2015 with two published papers & having presented my work at various conferences. I also worked simultaneously as one of three graduate teaching coordinators responsible for organising the graduate demonstrators for all course modules offered by the department.
