Working within Croda Long Term Innovation group, sitting across chemistry, biotechnology and open innovation. Exploring new technologies to meet Croda sustainability ambitions.

In this role I supported the global R&T, (research and technology), function to embed sustainability into their day to day working. This included providing training and help where needed to any of our teams around the globe. Key topics included looking at our intrinsic sustainability credentials, (such a bio-based content and biodegradability), as well as extrinsic sustainability, (quantifying the sustainability benefits in use of our products).

My previous role at Croda was in the UK Synthesis team based at the Hull manufacturing site. In this role, I am worked with Croda's New Molecule Innovations team, bringing my sustainability knowledge to the group. My projects included synthesising a polymeric candidate for one of our new acquisitions. I relished the opportunity to work with some of the brightest minds in the company and develop my technical knowledge.

The second role I took as part of Croda's Technical Graduate Pogramme was with the Sustainability team, again based at Cowick. In this role I supported Croda's businesses to develop case studies that quantify the downstream sustainability benefits of our products. In addition to this I worked with our manufacturing sites to look at how energy is used on plant, with a view to calculate the 'carbon cost' of making our products. During the graduate scheme, I had three placements around Croda's business. My first placement was with the applications team for Energy Technologies. This was based at Croda's head office at Cowick Hall. In this role, I used technical knowledge to evaluate new and existing products for the Lubricants market, carrying out laboratory experiments and providing technical support to sales and marketing.

Carried out a 12-month industrial placement with Crown (who specialise in metal packaging) as part of the Master’s degree programme. Worked effectively as part of the Analytical team in the Packaging Sciences department. Conducted a yearlong project which investigated the chemistry of a variety of food products using HPLC and ICP-OES. Assessed packaging performance using SEM-EDX. Then compared product chemistry and packing performance and proposed theories for metal defect formation. Made suggestions of how defect formation could be mitigated and how current analytical techniques could be improved. Successfully liaised with one of Crown’s customers to pool information that the company was previously lacking. Also acted as an ambassador for Crown in planning and delivering a 6-week project for nearly 200 children at a local college. The project focussed on teaching the students about food and metal interactions drawing on knowledge that had been picked up over the short time spent with the company. Show less
