After completing Croda's Graduate Development Programme, (GDP), I am currently working as Group Sustainability Coordinator for global R&T. This role builds on experience I gained during the GDP where I had roles in both R&T and Group Sustainability. In this new role I am helping to embed sustainability within the function, by giving training and guidance to any of our teams around the globe. Key areas of focus are increasing the bio-based content of our raw material portfolio and quantifying the sustainability benefits in use of our products. During the graduate scheme I had three placements; the final of those was based at Croda's Hull manufacturing site in the UK Synthesis team - where I looked to synthesise a novel ion dissipative polymer for one of our recent acquisitions. My graduate placements also included a role in Croda's Group Sustainability team - looking at every aspect of the company's operations and how they can be more sustainable. And in the Energy Technologies team - working with market specialists to test Croda products in customer applications. I graduated First Class with a Master's in Chemistry from the University of Sheffield. My Master's project looked at flow induced crystallisation of polymers, working in the department's SMALL laboratory alongside Dr. Oleksandr Mykhaylyk and Prof. Tony Ryan. During my degree I spent a year with Crown Packaging in Wantage, in the Analytical Department. In this role I conducted chemical analyses on a variety of food and beverage products, (using techniques such as HPLC, ICP-OES and SEM-EDX), liaising with customers to investigate packaging performance.

This included providing training and help where needed to any of our teams around the globe. Key topics included looking at our intrinsic sustainability credentials, (such a bio-based content and biodegradability), as well as extrinsic sustainability, (quantifying the sustainability benefits in use of our products). -

It has also given me the chance to pursue my passion for sustainability and learn what we are doing at Croda to help. Show less -

Then compared product chemistry and packing performance and proposed theories for metal defect formation. Made suggestions of how defect formation could be mitigated and how current analytical techniques could be improved. Successfully liaised with one of Crown’s customers to pool information that the company was previously lacking. Also acted as an ambassador for Crown in planning and delivering a 6-week project for nearly 200 children at a local college. The project focussed on teaching the students about food and metal interactions drawing on knowledge that had been picked up over the short time spent with the company. Show less
