About Sarah G. Phillips

I am Professor of Global Conflict and Development at The University of Sydney. I also lead the research training and mentoring program at the Sana’a Center for Strategic Studies (Yemen and Lebanon), and am a research associate at the Developmental Leadership Program (University of Birmingham, UK). My research uses concepts and methods from International Relations and Anthropology to investigate international intervention, knowledge production in conflict-affected areas, and non-state governance, with a particular focus on the Middle East and Africa. I have published three single-authored books, the latest of which, 'When There Was No Aid,' was awarded the Australian Political Studies Association’s biennial Crisp Prize for the best scholarly political science monograph (2018-20), and was a Book Of The Year (2020) at both Foreign Affairs and the Australian Book Review.I am also published widely in top-tiered academic journals, including International Studies Quarterly, European Journal of International Relations, Security Studies, Foreign Affairs, African Affairs, Journal of International Development, and International Affairs. My piece in African Affairs (co-authored with Justin Hastings) was awarded the biennial Stephen Ellis Prize for the most innovative article in 2014-15. I have also been awarded a number of prestigious competitive grants, including three from the Australian Research Council. You can hear me talk about 'When There Was No Aid' here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xdGavgTFM-U&feature=youtu.be&ab_channel=AustralianInstituteofInternationalAffairs( www.sarahphillips.org )
