About Sarah Hutton

Sarah is the director of an SME specialising in all types of social research and educational materials, report writing and practitioner toolkits to promote organisational change. With this comes an academic and practical appreciation of difficulties tackling risk and vulnerability management, discrimination and bias in public sector organisational settings. She is engaged in cutting age research with multiple stakeholders across academic fields and has developed a unique insight into how research can inform practice, delivering research that methodologically rigorous, innovative, and value oriented.Prior to this, Sarah joined Frazer-Nash Consultancy as a Senior Consultant and psychologist, on the Digital Advisory Team. She brings a wealth of experience from previous law enforcement and academic backgrounds, to assist with their 'cyber and psychology' approach, working closely with their Behavioural Psychology Unit. Prior to her work at FNC, Sarah worked at the Business and Law Faculty at the Open University as a Lecturer, based on the Policing Organisation and Practice Team as part of a group designing and delivering the new Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship (PCDA) for new police officers, as well as contributing to the overall development of programmes under the Police Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF). There she was chairing the academic component of the second year of the apprenticeship degree and recently completed an MBA. She maintains a teaching post at the Business and Law Faculty part time and is also a dissertation supervisor for Arden University Psychology Department. Sarah worked as a detective in both the Metropolitan Police and Sussex Police for 15 years. During this time, she worked for Operation Trident, as well as in Organised Crime, on a pilot project designed to monitor and disrupt those designated as high-level organised criminals. Within Sussex Police she specialised in rape and child abuse investigations. Research conducted whilst in the Met police contributed to her PhD thesis on organised crime, which in 2018 received the Open University Social Science prize. Her experience as an investigator and researcher within different police forces, has contributed to a wide variety of research interests within policing, particularly around organised crime, detective / organisational culture and safeguarding investigations. Within psychology she is interested in organisational learning, psychological safety and fostering environments in which innovation can flourish. Sarah is APMG change management certified.

Advising on training / support for upskilling in specialist areas as well as the provision of implementable managers ‘toolkits’. • ‘Police Race Action Plan’ work: Currently undertaking research for the College of Policing on the ‘adultification’ of black children, opportunities to minimise discrimination and bias, disparities affecting Black people and resulting low levels of confidence in police. • High-level problem solving: harnessing psychological safety techniques and providing criminological solutions, improving leadership behaviours in public sector roles to facilitate innovation.
