I am a nursing student pursuing my bachelor’s degree at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. As a nursing student, I’ve gained hands-on experience through my Foundations of Nursing clinical rotation in an acute care setting at Shady Grove Medical Center. There, I took vitals, administered medications, assisted with activities of daily living, and performed head-to-toe assessments. I’ve also volunteered at Shady Grove Medical Center’s Stepping Stones Program, where I gained an understanding of medical diagnosis, treatment, and use of medical equipment by shadowing doctors, nurses, and technicians from a variety of medical practices.In addition to my academic and clinical experience, I am passionate about patient care and believe that nurses have a unique opportunity to impact patients’ lives positively. So when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s disease in the summer of 2021, midway through my pursuit of a biology degree to go to medical school, I decided to switch my major to nursing when, as a hospital patient, I saw myself more in the shoes of the compassionate, empathetic, and caring nurses than in the shoes of the doctors.Outside of nursing, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, staying active, and trying new Mediterranean recipes to keep my gut healthy. Balance is essential to being a successful nursing student and future nurse, which I will strive to maintain in my personal and professional development.
