About Sarah Larkin

I was part of a busy journal production department at SAGE Publications. I held various roles within the SAGE journals production team, over the years. My final position was that of Senior Project Editor, a role which enabled me to continue to gain hands-on experience working with the journal content, but also allowed me to work on several different department and business critical projects. I possess good problem solving and communication skills and work well individually or as part of a team. I was always keen to help my production colleagues and share my experience and knowledge.I found the academic publishing industry to be challenging and fast paced. There are always new opportunities for an individual to develop and this is essential as the market is changing dramatically. Plan S is driving a surge in open access publication and companies are adapting quickly to offer their authors the most convenient route to open access publishing. I found being part of SAGE’s drive towards increasing the amount of open access content it publishes to be exhilarating and informative.I also feel very lucky to have been able to work closely with the legal and research integrity teams at SAGE and it has sparked a personal interest in publishing ethics. I helped to create and maintain best practice documents for the company, provide publishing ethics training (with a focus on production) and offered a production perspective on a range of publishing ethics-based queries and policies. Expectations from authors, editors, readers and the industry are always evolving, and I found it exciting to take part in these discussions.Skills:* Keen eye for detail* Process improvement* Focused on budgets and timeliness* Strong stakeholder management* Adaptable relationship management and influencing skills* Builds trusted advisor relationships* Flexible to challenges* Confident using the Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe annotation tools and Adobe pitstop* Confident using Confluence* Experience of HTML

Retained a list of 7 journals and the manuscript tracking system super-user role. I also worked on several projects, here are some examples:SAGE Open Access Portal:• Overall Scope and Project Planning: requirements gathering, identify potential blockers.• Process development: global cross-department team, new process workflows created and documented on Confluence.• Enhancements and UAT: Enhancements to SAGE's existing manuscript tracking system, as well as the new portal. Feedback on impact proposed enhancements would have to the current system and processes. I was also involved in extensive user and regression testing before each roll-out.• Training of Journals Production staff: in-person and remote (PowerPoint, demos and breakout groups).Flexible Page Budget Project:• Devised a process for handling FPB via the current production manuscript tracking system. As opposed the traditional method which would be to have a set page budget per volume.• Compose training documents (Confluence) and running training sessions for PEs.• Monitoring transfer of journals: evidence gathering.• Create workable solutions for concerns (unfamiliar way of working).Publishing Ethics:• Expanded on the publishing ethics work from previous role.• Provided dept. training.• Help/advised PEs and legal team on specific publishing ethics cases. (e.g. Legal team devised solution I offered advice on how best to action the solution in production).• Member of the Research and Integrity Group (extremely proud of the contribution I was able to make towards establishing SAGE's Name Change Policy).

⦁ Day-to-day running of 10+ journals⦁ Detail oriented and focused on time-to-publication targets.⦁ Identified bottlenecks in procedures and was happy to highlight and discuss potential solutions.⦁ Relationship management: Daily communication and quick responses are vital in maintaining good working relationships. I have taken on extra journals at short notice (a PE leaves or SAGE acquires a large list of titles which must be distributed quickly). It is important to build strong relationships with new editors quickly to maintain trust and to continue to be able to provide an excellent service.I worked closely with colleagues from across the company (editorial, marketing, commercial sales).⦁ Flexible (e.g. take on a supplement at short notice and schedule).⦁ Assertive, but fair (e.g. always willing to discuss requests from journal Editors, but push back on non-lean requests).⦁ Advertising within journal issues:I worked closely with the commercial sales (CS) team in order to place these adverts in the best position . Ensuring the client’s needs were met was vital, but, also that the needs of my editors are considered. Worked with the CS team, to develop advertising and supplement workshops.Adobe PitStop to pre-flight adverts and fix minor errors.⦁ SMART Superuser (SU) SAGEs manuscript tracking system is called SMART. I was part of the team that phased in its use to the London team in 2009 and the New Delhi team in 2010. Created a user guide (Confluence) and training.SMART enabled PEs to handle more journals and articles efficiently, reduce the time it took to process/publish content and save money.Assist colleagues with queries and raised bug tickets with the IT developer teams.Worked with developer team to review SMART product prioritisation backlog and review future rollouts.UAT.Maintained guides and trained colleagues on system changes (buy-in and demo changes).
