I discovered my love for data analysis and visualization through an unconventional path -- through my quest to find individual stories within the recent historical record. As a historian, I was familiar with working with historical narratives and writing about them, but my doctoral research required a new skill set for performing research using large-scale internet and web archives.This quest has taught me to code and read code in Python, Scala, and Java, and to use analysis algorithms and visualization tools. More than that, I've had the opportunity to document and share my research methods with other historians and archivists who are interested in working with similar source bases. Through my collaboration with the Archives Unleashed Project, a joint project between the University of Waterloo and York University, I created a series of online learning guides, a textbook chapter, and had the opportunity to deliver presentations and workshops at events worldwide.This career path combines my passion for teaching with my love for writing, and my new skills in computational methods. In my current position as a sessional instructor in the Arts First program at the University of Waterloo, I teach undergraduate students how to combine original research using data analysis and visualization with effective writing and research techniques, in order to become better writers themselves.
