About Sarah Phillips

💡I am a systems leadership specialist. Collaborating with senior leaders and stakeholders to develop and implement system-wide strategies and interventions using co-design approach. With over 15 years of experience as a systems-psychodynamic organisation consultant, trained by The Tavistock in London, my approach draws upon psychoanalysis, psychodynamics, social anthropology, complexity theory, action research, open systems theory, systems thinking, systems theory, and socio-technical systems (STS). This background aligns well with NHSE for ICS and current global trends in leadership. In practice this means I help individuals, groups, and organisations navigate complex contexts and chart their path forward.🚀 I am also the proud founder of VeinTrain Ltd, a global brand revolutionising how we learn practical skills online. Published author- VeinTrain provides evidenced based, high-quality solutions for essential and most commonly performed skills in healthcare skills of venepuncture and cannulation. Expert Witness: As a national leader in competency standardisation, I was recognised for innovation given a showcase stand at WISH in Qatar in 2018 for the flatpack vein innovation - that delivers the skills lab directly into the hands of clinicians. The book I authored and decades of experience is all in online practical curriculum. My focus is on driving positive change for patients and citizens, while reducing waste and costs.🌎 My international career spans across the NHS, private healthcare, and global markets. The innovative flatpack vein system sees me following the vein around as it made me redundant in skills training! The solution simplifies the approach to our wicked problem of cannulation failure. As a systems thinker I am dedicated to offering customisable solutions tailored that can be adapted to suit each organisation's unique needs, fostering locally-led change. My work always seeks to empower colleagues, providers and specialists to release their own unique potential and that or their speciality and organisation. I share decades of expertise adopting a coaching style approach. Organisations fascinate me and working with the whole system in Nottingham is a genuine privilege. Enabling leaders and releasing talent everywhere! I work for a talented ICS team of 70,000!Happy to connect and make a difference in the world of organisational development, leadership, talent or health.

Systems-psychodynamic consulting to individuals, groups and organisations.I was trained by the internationally recognised centre of excellence for psychological practice - The Tavistock, London. Some of the leading thinkers and theories in group dynamics, leadership and organisational consultancy originated in the Tavistock.Systems psychodynamics draws upon psychoanalysis, psychodynamics, social anthropology, complexity theory, action research, open systems theory, systems thinking, systems theory and socio-technical systems (STS), which in organisational development is an approach to complex organisational work design that recognises and studies the interaction between people in their different roles, tasks and sub-systems and the technologies of their workplaces. I have special interests in leadership, organisational change, and complexity leadership, with extensive experience in working with wicked problems as innovation challenges using design thinking and systems thinking methodology for working with groups. I utilise an organisational role analysis framework for executive coaching, which I utilise for senior and executive colleagues internally and in consulting work globally, including in Syria and Afghanistan. Recently, I have been working as a senior leader in the Integrated Care System (ICS) NHS, space since its inception in 2022. I operate a waiting list as I have limited capacity

A visiting tutor for the Masters Programme. A mentor for students on the programme. This course combines experiential learning with the study of psychoanalytic and systemic theory in relation to organisations, bringing into view the complex emotional lives of contemporary organisations.Theory seminars and webinars introduce key concepts such as the individual unconscious, the group unconscious and the institutional unconscious. Contemporary papers and case studies bring theory to life, exploring issues such as authority and power, organisational change and the politics of difference. Race, intersectionality and difference are approached using a theoretical, individual and organisational lens, in order to explore how they impact organisational dynamics, and the capacity of leaders, managers and consultants to take up their roles.A range of conceptual tools develop the capacity to think critically and systemically about organisations. Learning to map organisational systems and understand the effects of organisational structure on organisational dynamics and vice versa. Thinking creatively ‘across the boundary’ between the conscious and unconscious aspects of organisational life, including those of the organisational system in which the course takes place.

I founded VeinTrain in 2007 to build a trusted global brand. A first and only choice for these, the most commonly performed skills in healthcare which were consistently being performed poorly. As a published author and national standardisation of competency lead, I knew we needed a different approach; standardised, high value, accessible and above all, quality. At the end of 2018 we won a showcase at WISH, Qatar for our innovation. At VeinTrain we know clinicians want to provide the best care for their patients and we are proud to be part of making this happen with our proven multi-platform solutions. Utilising decades of experience, evidence- based practice and analysis of what works best for learners and so their patient's. VeinTrain has a global community of followers and leaders. Talented at what they do - their enthusiasm is contagious. Offering individual access and contracts :- Whole systems: Guy's And St Thomas', Nottinghamshire Healthcare, Central London Healthcare. Core aim: Leaders at every level live the behaviours and values set out in the People Promise and 'Our ICS Leadership Way' as we move towards becoming one ICS Team of 70,000. To achieve this, our organisational development community co-designed our three workstreams to focus our joint efforts.Organisational Development (OD) enables people to transform systems. It is the application of behavioural science to organisational and system issues to align strategy and capability. It enhances the effectiveness of systems through interventions that enhances people’s collective capability to achieve shared goals. As I lead on our ICS delivery of these, I am leading on the design of 'our ICS' Talent and Leadership Strategy. My former role of culture and improvement offers a springboard of understanding as the system navigates the challenges of collaboration, grounded in a true systems thinking approach to realise extraordinary results. Our approach aims for all to see improvement as everyone’s business. All our ICS groups seek to create assets that reduce our workloads and duplication and engage with all: We strive to: Standardise- Consolidate-Automate and at the start and end of each meeting, we ask who is not here. Having travelled extensively for work and pleasure I am looking forward to this new natural step in the business growth in my career. Clinical TravelWorking in St Vincent's Hospital, Sydney offered a fantastic opportunity to work as a professional in a different country. The approach to nursing was high quality and autonomous working requesting medical consultations as required. This was different to the UK approach of a more medical led service. I enjoy working with other cultures. I have enjoyed long trips to Zambia, running VeinTrain UK from overseas and exploring opportunities for working in the future.
  • University Of Nottingham
    Pbl Facilitator
University Of Nottingham Jan 2022 - Dec 2022
    Derby, England, United Kingdom
PBL Facilitator -School of Medicine.Facilitating problem based learning - initially remotely then in person. Groups of 12 medical students for a series of sessions over 9 modules. 1st and 2nd years requiring facilitation using different approaches. Incredible students soon to be superb doctors and scientists. To facilitate well in PBL, holding onto the unknown was crucial for this work to be effective. This was exciting, challenging but very rewarding. A very healthy team where psychological safety was a given as curiosity was key to our work. Left to take up a new role back in NHS leadership. The Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) programme allows people from a wide diversity of backgrounds to become Foundation Year doctors within 4-years. Internationally-acclaimed research with high-quality teaching to nurture the next generation of doctors and scientists. One of a team of facilitators from various professional backgrounds for a course designed specifically for graduates from different professional backgrounds and degrees. Years of clinical experience, teaching and multi-professional work led me to take on this part time role. I throughly enjoy using group facilitation skills and being part of a team. Together we support students achieve understanding and assimilation of their learning, which leads them towards a successful career in medicine.
