Worked with Ashley Paz y Puente and Dr. Dinc Erdeniz in the Dunand Group at Northwestern. Primary focus was developing a novel process to fabricate NiTi shape memory wires for use in woven structures that could be used as orthopedic implants or light-weight actuators for miniature robotics. Various characterization techniques such as optical metallography, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, and x-ray tomography were used to analyze the composition and microstructure of the processed wires. Further work will aim at testing the mechanical properties of the wires and analyze the exhibition of the shape memory effect.

Assisted in research to design aluminum-based superalloys with superior creep resistance and high-temperature properties. Work included casting alloys with various compositions and conducting tests to evaluate the mechanical, electrical and thermal properties of the final alloy. Specific projects focused on investigating the cooling rate effects of age-hardening of a proprietary aluminum alloy as well as analyzing the age-hardening effect of a new aluminum alloy design.

Second Rotation: worked as a manufacturing intern in the Ellisville Composites Manufacturing plant. Completed various simplification projects to streamline machine data collection processes using VBA code. Conducted a thaw study on pre-impregnated carbon fiber material rolls to minimize time spent outside the freezer to both maximize material lifetime and decrease time spent waiting to receive new material for lay-up. Work also included 5S projects to improve workspace efficiency, assistance on the fan platform PFMEA, and setting up a KanBan system to maintain lean inventory for the fan platforms group.

First Co-op Rotation: Worked in the Repair MAE and Airfoils Development group within the Materials and Process Engineering Department in Evendale, OH. Responsibilities within the Repair MAE group included failure analysis of HPT blades as well as research regarding corrosion resistant coatings. Responsibilities within the development group included running tests to analyze the corrosive effects of several dust deposits on alloys subject to different heat treatment cycles. Received an External Focus award for one failure analysis report and a Clear Thinker award for work with the dust deposits.
