I am an Assistant Professor of English at the University of Central Florida, where I teach introductory and upper-level courses on scientific and technical communication, collaborative writing, and the rhetorics of public debate. My work has appeared in College English, Composition Forum, Rhetoric of Health and Medicine, Technical Communication Quarterly, Pedagogy, and POROI: Project on the Rhetoric of Inquiry. My current research focuses on how chronic disease patients gain and negotiate expertise about their conditions. In my book, The Patient Empowerment Paradox: Lyme Disease Rhetoric and Contested Health Literacies (forthcoming from USC Press, 2026), I show how widely accepted rhetorical moves often considered empowering become gridlocked and competing channels of information that can be disempowering and harmful to patients seeking medical relief. A key contribution of this book is its innovative rhetorical approach to understanding the literacies, tests, and practices that empowered Lyme disease patients have developed for themselves in an effort to cure chronic Lyme disease or ameliorate some of its symptoms.My research naturally informs and extends my teaching because it is intrinsically engaged with the idea of digital networks and focuses on writing to creative positive social change. Whether I am in a face-to-face, synchronous online, or asynchronous online environment, the challenge with teaching students is to show how information is reshaped by and across these networks. My courses include a range of workplace writing activities such as grant writing, document editing, and user-testing. Whenever possible, I bring in guest speakers, such as technical communicators at L3 Harris, Lockheed Martin, Capital One, and other organizations, to help students see how ideas and genres transfer across contexts.
