I continue to ride my horse in my free time. I obtained my Bronze and Silver medal in Dressage in 2017 and 2019. I’m currently a Zoologist at the Palm Beach Zoo primarily working with the primates, sloths, small carnivores, and other similar species. Zoologist
CurrentI am currently a Primate Zoologist at the Palm Beach Zoo, working with each of the primates, additionally with other species mixed in. I work on a consistently rotating schedule that involves medicating, record keeping via ZIMS, operant conditioning using positive reinforcement training, enrichment construction and implication, relationship building, and diet distribution to name a few. The species I work with on some of the rotations include, 3.1 Golden Lion Tamarins, 1.1.1 Hoffman’s Two-Toed Sloths, 1.0 Goeldi’s Monkey, 3.3 Black Howler Monkeys, 0.3 Capuchin Monkeys, 2.4 Squirrel Monkeys, 3.0 Ring-Tailed Lemurs, 3.2 Red-Ruffed Lemurs, 2.1 Mexican Spider Monkeys, 1.2 Siamangs, and 2.0 African Servals. Recently, a Hoffman’s Two-Toed Sloth was born, I have been apart of team who worked around the clock, conducting many overnight shifts, in monitoring the baby in its first stages of life.On a weekly basis, I conduct Lemur chats to the public.
Elephant Caregiver
I was an Elephant Caregiver, where I worked with 1.3 African Bush Elephants. Training on safety protocols is very focused on. Utilizing only protected-contact and positive reinforcement through each interaction with the individuals. Diet preparation, medication administration techniques, enrichment applications, habitat maintenance, record keeping methods and routines, ATV daily usage, power tool practice, facility maintenance, and other similar tasks are performed.
Primate/ Prosimian Intern
I was an intern at Chase Sanctuary and Wildlife Conservancy, which is a rescue conservatory facility that houses, primates, prosimians, and a wide range of hoofstock, rodents, sloths, tamanduas, reptiles, and birds. Within the internship period, I worked on my observational project that focuses on a troop of Black & White Ruffed Lemurs. Comparing the behaviors that are exhibited and how the troop interacts with one another between a Black & White Ruffed Lemur Troop that have adopted two pre-adolescents that are not genetically theirs, and a Black & White Ruffed Lemur Troop that have produced their own young. My knowledge and experience has grown with ethogram development, heat-map advancement, note taking, and other similar features that will benefit my future career.
Student Lab Manager & Animal Husbandry Teaching Assistant
Throughout the semester of Fall of 2022, I was a Student Lab Manager & Animal Husbandry Teaching Assistant for the classes, Principles of Animal Husbandry, Principles of Animal Husbandry Lab, & Animal Training and Enrichment. In the Spring of 2023, classes being, Science of Animal Welfare and Science of Animal Welfare Lab. All classes I have previously taken and received employment recommendation from the head of the department. For the duration of the class, I gave guidance, advice, and have leadership responsibilities to the individuals in the class caring for the animals in the Anthrozoology department. Students will provide the animals of the department with daily food, water, enrichment, and occasional training. Species in the lab range from Rabbits, Guinea Pigs, Pigeons, a Crested Gecko, a Leopard Gecko, a Pacman Frog, A Marine Toad, A Ball Python, and so much more. Students are able to learn real-world application skills, critical thinking, teamwork, communication, and so much more.
Mammal Intern
As my time as a Mammal Intern for the Cameron Park Zoo, I experienced an array of different species housed and cared for at the facility. The four sections that I gained extensive knowledge in were, Hoofstock, Primates, Elephants, and Brazas. Species of a great example of these sections included, Masai & Reticulated Giraffe, Greater Kudu, Gerenuk, White-tailed Deer, and American Bison in the Hoofstock area. Ring-tailed & Red Ruffed Lemurs, Lar Gibbon, and Sumatran & Borean Orangutan in the Primate section. African Elephant, White Rhino, Sumatran Tiger, and African Lion in the Elephant department. Coyotes, Jaguars, Bobcats, Mountain Lions, Black Bears, and North American River Otters in the Brazas sector. Throughout these sections I constructed an arrangement of enrichment for the animals on what they were approved on. Examples being, fruit in ice, puzzles, and other manipulative items connected to food. I used time management in affect of the internship during cleaning and enrichment preparation.
Side Walker
We Can Ride is a non-profit volunteer-based organization that has a mission of connecting horses and people with disabilities all across the state of Minnesota. As a side walker, I assisted in helping the instructors, students, parents, and barn aids in various ways. I help with the students maintaining balance, form, and helping them have as much fun as possible while on a horse. The most rewarding take away I have from volunteering at We Can Ride is the smiles and laughs the students have while riding.
Orientation Leader
I was an Orientation Leader at Beacon College from August-December of 2020. I showed and helped new incoming freshmen around campus and the skills and requirements to be a successful college student throughout the rest of their college life.
