About Sarah Abdella
A fourth-year student at Miami University majoring in Adolescent English Education with a minor in Critical Race and Ethnicity Studies, graduating ahead of schedule in December of 2024. A recent recipient of the 2024 EHS Outstanding Social Justice Award, given for extensive undergraduate work in the social justice field. Recent projects include research concerning the archival silencing of Black history, the development of bilingual education legislature in the Midwest, and discriminatory educational policies such as Florida House Bill 1557. After creating curriculum informing and guiding discourse for teachers’ next steps in fighting for diverse education following House Bill 1557, my curriculum was published in an educational blog. My current internship builds on this as I work to create diverse and inclusive curriculum in an eighth grade classroom in Ohio. I am currently educating youth on the intricacies of implicit bias, critical thinking, the United States criminal justice system throughout time, and the constitutional rights of all people in an American court of law. In addition to this, I have six years of experience working for an Appalachian non-profit organization creating a social-emotional learning curriculum for high school students. On campus, I have held the Vice President of Member Development position for the Miami Panhellenic Association where I oversaw our 18 sorority chapters, communicated with university faculty, created contracts with outside vendors, created marketing materials, managed a budget, orchestrated large community events, and worked creatively towards the overall betterment of our community. Prior to this, I held the DEI Education and Programming coordinator position for Miami University Panhellenic Association where I created an accessible curriculum that identified and educated members on inclusion gaps within our greater community. My diverse skillset includes leadership, problem solving with progressive communication, and professional yet amiable people skills. Upon graduation, I aim to work for a social justice corporation where I can creatively collaborate with like-minded individuals to reconstruct a more just community and legal system. My personal interests include systemic injustice activism, civil rights advocacy, and educating Appalachian youth through my work at The iBelieve Foundation.
