As a participant in the Southwest Borderlands Initiative through the Cronkite School, I produced a longform story about the ways in which members of the Roma minority population of Eastern Europe fare in Hungary's education system. I also wrote a shorter piece about the closing of the Balkan Route for refugees, as it affected two refugee camps in Croatia and Austria. I worked on two main projects during my time with AZCIR — "The Background Machine" and an in-depth story about model legislation in Arizona. For The Background Machine, I created profiles for Arizona's incumbent candidates in the 2016 elections, including information from financial disclosure data sets, court records and legislative records. For the model legislation story, I examined data from a University of Chicago program that scans state bills across the country for matching phrases from legislation in other states.
