After an initial glance at my resume you might be inclined to summarize my professional career with one word- teacher. However, I would describe myself first and foremost as a passionate advocate for families and individuals with educational, cognitive, social, and emotional needs. During my 18 years working as a special education teacher in Virginia public schools, I serviced students with a variety of disabilities, including specific learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, language disorders, emotional disabilities, and intellectual disabilities. Prior to teaching I worked for two years at the Rappahannock Area Community Services Board to create and implement an instructional program for the development of independent living and vocational skills in adults with intellectual and emotional disabilities. I thrive on helping others access the resources, both in the school and community settings, that will allow them to maximize their potential. My goal is to work collaboratively with families and agencies to increase independence and allow individuals to have meaningful engagement with their community, and I will work tirelessly to reach this goal. Outside of work I enjoy having a direct impact in my community by volunteering at the local food bank and participating in community clean-up efforts. The common threads that connect my professional career and personal life are compassion for others, a deep interest in social justice, and a strong work ethic.
