In her role as Project Manager and Consumer Engagement Officer for the successful Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA) at SAHMRI, Sarah helped to establish and develop ROSA from its beginning in 2017, including coordinating the complex ethics, governance and data access requirements for this ambitious national ‘Big Data’ resource. ROSA linked data from the health and aged care sectors for the first time at a national scale to better understand how more than 3 million older people have navigated the aged care and healthcare sectors and how the care they receive affects their health and wellbeing. ROSA is the result of a partnership of 13 organisations encompassing scientists, clinicians, aged care industry providers and consumer advocates seeking to improve the lives of Australians in aged care. Sarah was the Project Manager and Consumer Engagement Officer for the ROSA research team which included 17 researchers and published 46 studies and obtained >$14 million for NHMRC and MRFF grant-funded studies. Under Sarah’s leadership the ROSA consumer engagement program was also developed, resulting in a program with 6 community representatives embedded and supported in its governance structure, a 3-year consumer engagement strategy, 27 community events and activities, and an effective and productive partnership between researchers and the community. In her role at ROSA, Sarah has also contributed to 5 scientific articles, including the development of a set of 12 indicators that could be used to allow independent, transparent, efficient comparisons of quality and safety across all aged care facilities in Australia using existing routinely collected data. This work was also published by the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety, and received significant community, media and government attention and was the subject of a senate motion.

In my current role at SAHMRI, I am helping to establish & develop the Registry of Senior Australians (ROSA), including facilitating consumer & community involvement in ROSA and coordination of consumer engagement activities.ROSA is being established by the Healthy Ageing Research Consortium – a cross-sectoral partnership of researchers, clinicians, aged care providers and consumer advocacy groups. ROSA is designed to monitor the health, service utilisation, medication use, mortality, and other outcomes of people receiving aged care services in South Australia. ROSA’s efficient model leverages existing information, bringing together diverse datasets already collected by different organisations throughout the country, to provide us with a whole picture of the ageing pathway. Supported by the South Australian Government through the Premier’s Research and Industry Fund, this ambitious undertaking will provide a unique data resource that will allow evidence-driven decision-making to improve the lives of all South Australians accessing aged care services.

The Tall Poppy Campaign was created by the Australian Institute of Policy and Science (AIPS) to recognise and celebrate Australian intellectual and scientific excellence and to encourage younger Australians to follow in the footsteps of our outstanding achievers. My role involved coordinating the South Australian component of the Tall Poppy Campaign, including organising the award ceremony at Government House, providing support to the Selection Committee, coordinating media training workshops for SA Tall Poppies and managing the SA social media content. This role was equivalent to 0.2 FTE per week and was worked around my 0.8 FTE role at University of South Australia.

In this role I managed the human ethics and governance administration requirements for approximately 20 research projects. I also contributed to grant and publication preparation, scientific research, research administration, and supervision of PhD students. I will be continuing to supervise my students in their final year as an Affiliate of UniSA in 2017.

Production and R&D Scientist for these sister biotech companies in Sydney. My role at Special Phage Services included lab-based research into using bacteriophage as an alternative to antibiotics in the treatment of bacterial infections such as MRSA. My role as a Production Scientist at Cellabs involved lab and office duties, including processing of orders, preparation and participation in audits (e.g. TGA and internal), preparation and production of laboratory reagents and diagnostic kits for sale (e.g. making ELISA kits, immuno-fluorescent kits, rapid test kits for tropical and infectious diseases such as Malaria, Giardia, Chlamydia, Toxocara, Trypanosoma cruzi), completing associated paperwork to TGA standard, and performing quality control tests.

This role involved customer service, handling money and balancing tills, operating the busy lottery terminals, managing/supervising and training junior staff.

I was employed as a part time casual executive assistant while studying my undergraduate degree. The work with Minmia was undertaken alongside the Shenpen Australia work, and involved promoting and communicating Australian Aboriginal women's lore. I was involved in home office administration, maintaining a basic website, helping to organise workshops and retreats, transcribing traditional stories from an Aboriginal Elder and helping in the preparation of her manuscript which was developed into a book "Under the Quandong Tree" by Minmia.

I was employed as a part time casual executive assistant while studying my undergraduate degree. Shenpen Australia is a Buddhist not-for-profit charitable organisation. I was involved in home office administration tasks, fundraising activities, preparing correspondence and interacting with people from different nationalities and cultures.
