I obtained a summer internship as part of the Shark Biology and Conservation Department - a leader in shark conservation since the late 1908s. Here I conducted an independent research project examining the electrosensory system of nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum). Specifically, I quantified the behavioral response threshold of wild-caught nurse sharks to prey-simulating electric stimuli. Professional highlights include:- Participating in multiple field work projects to collect and tag wild sharks- Collecting, measuring, and recording biological data using established protocols- Monitoring water quality using YSI probes - Assisting with animal husbandry in an aquarium settingUpon the conclusion of my research, I completed a written report on my findings and created and presented a poster at local and national symposiums to promote awareness of shark biology and conservation. I procured a paid position and designed an independent research project studying the relationship between individual variation in learning ability and personality in veiled chameleons (Chameleo calyptratus). I organized a series of video recorded trials and used a modified video logging program to quantify 4 behavioral categories. I mastered skills related to compiling, organizing, storing and retrieving large amounts of data. The manuscript I produced from this project served as my Honors Thesis. Barro Colorado Island, Panama

I assisted with graduate research by investigating water storage in tropical tree seedlings to assess capacitance and its contribution to drought performance. I worked in both a field and laboratory setting. Field work focused on conducting vegetation surveys and collecting sapling samples via GPS; laboratory work focused on measuring hydraulic conductance of samples and gathering biological data such as leaf mass and area. From this work I mastered my skill sets in plant identification and working in hot weather for extended periods of time. (Mentor: Brett Wolfe, PhD Candidate)

As a paid researcher I conducted an independent research project examining behavioral syndromes of veiled chameleons (Chameleo calyptratus). I used ELISA kits to quantify hormonal data and determine the physiological mechanisms underlying animal personality. I also assisted in performing necropsies, anesthetizing animals to collect dermal biopsies, and collecting blood samples. (Mentor: Russell Ligon, PhD Candidate; PI: Dr. Kevin McGraw)

I contributed to graduate research by using a modified video logging program to analyze behaviors during agonistic interactions of veiled chameleons (Chameleo calyptratus). I quantified >4,000 color photographs using Photoshop and other image editing programs. Additionally, I received training and certification in “Advanced Handling and Restraint” of subject animals.
