Sarah is an interdisciplinary design engineer, working across materials, hardware, software, physical, and speculative design. Much of her practice focuses on developing and scaling low-cost, high-impact applications of new technology. She has led design projects with London’s Air Ambulance, Ernst & Young, and the NHS, as well as her own co-founded venture: Even. Even supplies innovative, low-cost period underwear to humanitarian organizations and refugee camps around the world. If the entire United Nations budget was divided equally between the 180 million refugees it supports, everyone would have a budget allocation of $22 annually. Currently, to equip a displaced girl with a year’s worth of disposable sanitary pads costs around $38. Often, this means refugees receive only 1-2 months of period product support, if at all. The truth is, menstrual hygiene aid has become one of the most expensive categories in the humanitarian aid catalogue (per capita).Even has developed the first low-cost period underwear for the humanitarian sector. Evens underwear, priced at just £4, lasts for 5 years, and ensures menstruators in the most vulnerable circumstances have long-lasting, access to the products needed to take care of themselves safely and with dignity. For humanitarian organizations, Even's period underwear slashes costs by 85%, waste by 75%, emissions by 71% and warehousing volume by 92%.
