My specialism is in working with children and young people for whom English is an additional language. Within this field, I have extensive experience of cultural diversity, Special Educational Needs, refugees and trafficked and unaccompanied asylum-seeking children and young people. I currently lead the Hampshire EMTAS team which comprises Specialist Teacher Advisors, Bilingual Assistants and a team of people whose roles focus on promoting the achievement of children from Hampshire’s various Traveller communities.I have also worked as an associate lecturer at the University of Winchester, co-delivering a Masters level course in teaching English as an Additional Language.I co-authored the EAL MESH guide with colleagues Professor Naomi Flynn and Chris Pim. This collaborative venture comprises a synthesis of EAL research, pedagogy and practice and was first published online in 2015.In the summer of 2019, I wrote a new online course focusing on EAL assessment including EAL/SEND. This was published by Bloomsbury and is available to EAL practitioners looking for CPD opportunities.In 2024, I gained a PhD at the University of Reading. My research was on the language-learning experiences of young, UK-born bilingual learners.
