I was an elected member of the Shirley Boys’ High School Board throughout some challenging years for Canterbury schools (post quake). My passion for education and its important role in the successful future for our children, our country and the global stage inspired me to be involved. I believe I added value to Shirley Boys’ High (especially with planning for the new school project) and the wider community as I:• offered a strategic and objective approach to all governance related matters• have previous experience acting as a Chair, Deputy Chair and held responsibility for an education finance portfolio• offered many years governance experience in the education sector• held an understanding to the rationale to all historic and current policy and strategy decisions• offered a fresh approach, as well as continuity which was important as we planned the new school on the new school site• offered proven negotiation experience with the MOE (successful response to the MOE’s proposal for South New Brighton & Central New Brighton School to merge)• delivered business acumen• held a passion for education and it’s important role.

I was involved with South New Brighton School since our eldest son walked through the front gate (he is now a young businesman so it was some time ago). I became a Trustee and held the finance portfolio for a number of years. I was elected Chairperson and successfully lead the school through the response to the Minister of Education's initial proposal for merger with another local school. Following considerable consultation with community, staff, the MOE and the Minister a decision was made that the merger should not continue. This was a very welcomed decision by our school community and I'm very proud to have been able to lead the school to a favourable outcome.
