The S.H.E. College Fund (SCF) provides full scholarships for college, university, or trade school education along with life skills training and mentorship to young women of Narok County who have been at risk throughout childhood and adolescence for harmful traditional practices such as Female Genital Mutilation/Cutting (FGM/C) and Early Forced Child Marriage (EFCM). They take refuge at accredited Safe Houses located throughout the county that provide food and shelter, a safe and supportive environment and ensure the girls' education through the end of secondary school.Upon graduation from high school, these young women are no longer protected by Kenyan law and are in danger of returning to the oppression they originally fled in their village – unless they secure a government bursary or a privately-sponsored scholarship to continue with college studies.By providing these young women with post-secondary education, the S.H.E. College Fund makes it possible for them to acquire the knowledge, skills, experience, and self-confidence to go out into the world, secure a job or start a small business, and return to their families and communities as successful graduates, empowered adult women, role models, and influential changemakers. The S.H.E. College Fund provides funding for that ever-so-important next step, offering support to those students who choose, despite the hardship of striking out on their own, to reach for the stars.
