Exploration of historical transportation networks, current bicycle and pedestrian trails, and on-road bike-ped facilities (or lack thereof) during cross-country family bicycle journey with husband and nine-year-old daughter. Examples of off-road facilities include: the C&O Canal Towpath (MD/VA/WV), Great Allegheny Passage (MD/PA), Panhandle Trail (WV), Ohio to Erie rail trail system (OH), Katy Trail (MO), Michelson Trail (SD), Coeur d' Alene Trail (ID), John Wayne/Iron Horse Trail (WA). Consultant to the Bicycle Coalition of Maine and MaineDOT for school travel planning and promotion assistance - for schools and communities exploring safe ways for kids to walk & bike to school and around town. Also assisted municipalities with applying for MaineDOT infrastructure funds to make walking and bicycling routes to school safer. Founder, director and then board member at Portland Green Streets, a creative non-profit effort to change transportation behavior in Greater Portland - away from the single-occupancy vehicle and toward the use of alternate transportation. Portland Green Streets conducted this work through social networking; offering access to information on walking, biking, using public transit, and carpooling; participating in alternate transportation advocacy; and a monthly Green Streets Day newsletter and celebration.
