I am a part of the undergraduate research cohort of Mississippi State Forestry Department’s Ecology and Management of Resilient and Adaptive Forest NSF REU program. I am currently studying the water quality impacts of Poplar hybrids as a short rotation woody crop (SRWC) for biofuel and the ecosystem services they provide such as nutrient runoff mitigation in riparian zones adjacent to agricultural fields. I am responsible for collecting groundwater from the SRWC plots and processing the samples in the lab to document particular nitrogen and phosphate, as well as other related field and lab work within the project.

Using kick-net and leaf pack methods to capture macroinvertebrates in local streams, I identified the organisms to document species richness and water quality. I assisted with community outreach events to promote improved water quality and biodiversity retention, and to recruit volunteers for the Stream Monitoring Information Exchange Program.
