Sarah Nash is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the University of Iowa. Prior to joining the University of Iowa in 2021, she spent almost 6 years at the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium's Alaska Native EpiCenter as their Director of Cancer Surveillance in 2015. In this role, she managed the Alaska Native Tumor Registry, served as PI of the Alaska SEER sub-contract, and conducted research to address Alaska Native cancer disparities.Previously, she was a Cancer Prevention Fellow with the National Cancer Institute, where she worked in the Nutritional Epidemiology Branch of the Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics. There, her research focused on the role of modifiable risk factors, such as diet and tobacco use, in cancer etiology. As part of the Cancer Prevention Fellowship Program, she received an MPH at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, where she focused on gaining skills in epidemiological and biostatistical methods, and nutrition. Before joining the NCI, she completed her doctoral research at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. There, her research focused on developing biomarkers of traditional and non-traditional food use to understand associations with chronic disease risk in Yup'ik people.Sarah's current research interests are:- Cancer surveillance: monitoring and reporting of trends in cancer incidence and mortality, particularly among North America's Indigenous peoples.-Understanding and addressing health inequalities, particularly in Alaska Native/Native American and rural populations- The role of modifiable risk factors including diet, tobacco use, and physical activity in cancer etiology- Nutritional epidemiologic methods; specifically, reducing measurement error in dietary assessment through the improvement of existing self-report tools, as well as the development and validation of objective biomarkers.
