Junior Research Analyst

Banbury, England, United Kingdom

🥦 I reviewed the commitments made to date on food loss and waste within NDC's ahead of COP27, finding that many countries miss this opportunity to reduce GHG emissions and to meet SDG12.3. Find out more here:https://wrap.org.uk/resources/report/food-commitments-to-action♻️ I reviewed NDC commitments to achieving a circular economy and found that whilst many countries are aspiring to this, overall there is a lack of clear goals, implementation plans and robust measurement. Phd Student

WISE Ambassador working to inspire women to undertake a career in STEM and promote gender equality. My project studies the degradation products released as plastics are aged under environmental conditions. A method to study the volatile products when plastic samples are exposed to UV light has also being developed. Environmentally aged plastic will be collected and analysed to compare with the artificially aged equivalents, to ensure laboratory methods are representative of real-world degradation. Alternatives to conventional plastics that use waste materials to produce bio-composites are being developed, with the aim to find a material that will more readily degrade under environmental conditions.

Research Placement

Nottingham, United Kingdom

Over a 10 week period I worked independently on an academic research project, investigating the extraction dependence of diesel soot with the end goal of improving engine efficiency. This project was undertaken in a different discipline to my degree, enabling me to apply research skills previously developed to a new area. As part of the placement I created a poster to present my findings to a wider audience, and had an SAE technical paper accepted for presentation at WCX™: SAE World Congress Experience. This was presented on my behalf and received a high level of interest. I also produced a report and poster for this work and presented the project to industrial sponsors.

Student Chemist

Derby, United Kingdom

As a student chemist within the Applied Sciences department, my experiences include:• I worked on a research project aiming to solve a problem commonly encountered in fuel additive formulation. I presented my research at a site-wide symposium, and the positive feedback received resulted in my work being shown at the global company symposium.• I was responsible for the chemistry aspects of an interdisciplinary fundamental research project within the Engine Oils segment. This involved presenting ideas and findings to senior Lubrizol colleagues, as well as preparing documents for funding applications. I also presented this as a technical presentation to technical colleagues on site.• I worked on customer enquiries and tenders within the Fuels segment, raising my understanding of customer needs and commercial awareness. The tight deadlines associated with this improved my time and project management skills. • As a member of the committee for the Sports and Social Club, I planned a trip to Cadbury World open to all site employees. This involved contacting companies for quotes on transport and tickets, and organising and coordinating arrangements before and during the event. • Volunteering as a STEM ambassador involved representing Lubrizol at local careers events and school fairs. This involved presenting my work at an appropriate level for the audience, as well as discussing different career pathways with students.
