Having started out in the NHS as an emergency care nurse back in 2005 and then moving to become a doctor I have a well-rounded experience of what life on the shop-floor is all about. For the past 5+ years I have broadened my base to include senior leadership roles.While passion is often an overused word, I do have this in abundance when it comes to patient safety, staff efficiency and how digital models, tools and applications can and should be used to influence and drive these in the NHS.The NHS lags behind even most households when it comes to digital tech, with funding often cited as the main issue. For me this is a shortsighted view and one which I try to challenge as constructively as possible at every opportunity.Around 87% of the UK adult population has a smartphone of some sort, which has the ability to collect simple data such as steps/activity levels among many other elements. This could and should be tapped into when a patient attends healthcare establishments just as routinely as asking what current meds they take is.I’m on a mission to try and be the driver for change, so healthcare practitioners are empowered to change their way of working, to tap into the wealth of information a patients wearable or smartphone offers (if they aren’t on a monolithic do-it-all EPR), to have this accessed routinely and for it to help shape the care a patient receives, making it as integral a part of an assessment as chest auscultation or history-taking.
