I was written into this world before I was born into it: my father wrote odes to my mother's pregnant, swollen stomach. The family bookshelf, towering, thick mahogany lined from top to bottom with my childhood: a collection of well-worn paperback spines. In high school, I read too much Sylvia Plath and wrote bad poetry about smoking Marlboro reds; it only seemed a natural progression to pursue a degree in English. I pictured myself, huddled in a far corner of a dark cafe, furiously typing away at what was sure to be the next great American novel. Instead, I spent two years slogging through Shakespeare, my writing confined mostly to essays. I transferred to the School of Journalism, and almost immediately, I became entranced with the world of Advertising. I delighted in the creativity the industry both fostered and demanded. My eyes opened to the artistry hung on billboards and bus stations: this art saw more eyes than museums, their words more pervasive than novels but nonetheless profound. Simply put: I fell in love. After graduating, I found temporary work at a local dispensary, which was quickly made permanent by Covid-19. However, I am grateful for my time in the Cannabis Industry, as it allowed me to gain a knowledge base I believe to be indispensable to the advertising industry as recreational cannabis legalization continues in the United States. As the world slowly returns from its state of isolation, I find myself more eager to write and design than ever before. Creating has always been my best means of connection.
