This internship was required for my Public Health capstone class at Syracuse University. I finished over 400 hours working with the Heath Systems Initiatives Director and the Community Mission Manager. I helped to spread the American Cancer Society's mission into the community through being involved in health initiatives in the Syracuse community, local businesses, and the Syracuse City School District.I was able to create and implement a Cafeteria Extreme Makeover at a Syracuse City K-8 school. This extreme makeover had a strong focus on making the cafeteria more conducive to healthy food and lifestyle choices. I was able to create student focus groups to help with renaming the fruits and vegetables as well as giving the cafeteria a new name. All of these things are proven to increase the consumption of healthy food by Cornell University's Smarter Lunchroom research and techniques. I was also able to form relationships with well known companies such as Chobani yogurt and Fleet Feet to sponsor the makeover and generously donate products to make the experience even more exciting. I also helped plan a farmers market that was placed in the cafeteria for the students to access free fruits and vegetables to bring home during their lunch period. This was a collaborative project that I was able to see from start to finish and work with very inspirational professionals in the Syracuse community who have a strong passion for creating healthier environments for everyone. I learned a great deal about project planning, implementation , and evaluation. I also learned the importance of relationship building with all stakeholders in a project and how daily communication is the key to keeping a collaborative work environment for successful outcomes.
