🦟 For my BSc thesis I conducted a research project based on the development of DNA aptamers to inhibit PfVps4, one of the proteins recently identified to be part of the extracellular vesicle formation machinery in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum. The formation of the vesicles is essential for the parasite to fully establish itself in the host and inhibiting PfVps4 could hinder the biogenesis of these vesicles. 🌟 My greatest achievements in this role were:➤ Obtention of proof-of-concept results that could lead to a potential new therapy for malaria.➤ Effective scientific communication in the defense of my BSc thesis, achieving a 9.8/10 grade.➤ Self-organization and quick learning, becoming proficient in +8 lab techniques with little supervision.➤ Computer literacy acquired by performing multiple in-silico analyses of +40 DNA/protein structures.➤ Project and time management skills as evidenced by overcoming challenges and meeting deadlines.

🧬 I had the opportunity to collaborate with a multidisciplinary team that studies liver cancer from a clinical and translational approach. I analyzed the effects of nutritional supplements and growth factors on the proliferation of a cell line derived from a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).🌟 My main accomplishments were:➤ Successfully performing DNA isolation, protein purification, qPCR, and flow cytometry analysis.➤ Control and maintenance of a HCC cell line under sterile and biosafety conditions. ➤ Efficient review of 3 scientific manuscripts through analytical and creative thinking. ➤ Team-oriented worker proven by my exceptional interpersonal skills and can-do attitude.

🦠 I was able to work with a group in the Infectious Diseases Unit that studies whether differential miRNA expression in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) can be used as a biomarker for cardiovascular disease risk in patients with HIV.🌟 Some of my most important feats were:➤ Extraction and quantification of miRNA from blood samples belonging to 5 different HIV patients. ➤ Computer skills resulting from classifying and managing data from +200 clinical samples.➤ Detail-oriented and organizational skills acquired through accurately following SOPs.➤ Self-confidence when working in a lab obtained thanks to first-hand experience outside of university.
